Art, culture, & tradition
At the intersection of 3 countries
In every season, Carinthia will surprise you with a diverse art and cultural offer. Impressive natural spectacles and well-known excursion destinations are as much a part of the recreational program as are the numerous cultural sites, which tell of the long and eventful history of Austria's southernmost region.
CULTURE, WINE AND PANORAMIC VIEWS
Church art space: there is sacred art to discover in Maria Saal Cathedral before heading into the tranquil Gurktal valley. Here sits Gurk Cathedral, an impressive pilgrimage church and Basilica with the oldest Lenten cloth in Carinthia and a treasure trove of art objects. Be sure to stroll through the park and treat yourself to something sweet in the Ayurvedic café! The next stop takes you through 14 gates up to Hochosterwitz Castle - one of the most beautiful castle complexes in Austria with a fantastic panoramic view. Finally, take a detour to the Burg-Taggenbrunn winery with works by André Heller and wine tasting on the terrace. The driving time for the road trip is around 2.5 hours
IMPRESSIVE MOUNTAINS
In under an hour‘s drive, day-trippers in Slovenia can be in the middle of the Triglav National Park with its spectacular views, Russian chapel, and imposing cliffs. A highlight is the drive along the old mountain road with around 50 hairpin bends up to the Vršič Pass. Back in the valley, you can visit the Planica ski jump and zipline or take a leisurely stroll through the enchanting winter sports resort of Kransjka Gora. Nature lovers will be amazed by the Jasna mountain lake or the Zelenci nature reserve with its spring. If you want to combine the road trip with a little city flair, you can be in Ljubljana in an hour and treat yourself to something refreshing in one of the cafés by the river.
CULINARY ITALO-FEELING
For many Carinthians, the Luschariberg or Monte Lussari, at 1790 metres above sea level in the Julian Alps, is practically an extension of their local mountains. After all, you can be there in less than 45 minutes. If you are feeling sporty, hike up to the pilgrimage church. If you prefer to take it easy, take the cable car and enjoy the panoramic view, Aperol on the sun terrace and peaks as far as the eye can see. After a relaxing time at lofty heights, head down into the valley to the small town of Tarvisio. The old town is home to several boutiques and delicatessens as well as cafés and restaurants. A must-visit stop!
CURVES AND CRESTS OF THE NOCKY MOUNTAINS
Stone pine forests, peaks like gentle waves, rustic huts: In just an hour‘s drive, motorcyclists, convertible fans, and classic car enthusiasts can immerse themselves in the completely different world of the Nock Mountains. The landscape and panorama are unique in the Alps - and can be particularly enjoyable uphill and downhill along the Nockalm Road with its 52-hairpin bends. If you want to stretch your legs, hike around the mystical Windebensee lake or follow the Path of the Elements loop. The Nockalm Road is open from the beginning of May to the end of October.
IN THE FLOW WITH THE RIVER
Ever heard of the Soča River in Slovenia? It is famous for its wildly romantic gorges and emerald-green water. In less than 1.5 hours, explorers from Lake Wörthersee can be in the Soča valley. Waterfalls, rafting, suspension bridges, museums: the valley is a paradise for outdoor fans. If you like hiking, follow the Soča trail. The walk to the Soča spring is ideal for some beautiful photo opportunities. Tip: The journey via the pretty mountain town of Bovec and the historic, winding Predil Pass with its mountain lake and fort from the First World War is particularly scenic.
ARCHITECTURE AND ART AT THE MUSEUM LIAUNIG
Very few people would expect to find a top-class art museum in the idyllic rural village of Neuhaus, around 50 minutes‘ drive from Hotel »Schloss Seefels«. It is the legacy of art collector Herbert Liaunig. He built a spacious art museum above the Drau, whose architecture alone is worth a visit. While a sculpture park can be discovered outdoors, one of the most extensive collections of Austrian art from 1845 onwards is on display indoors – from Hans Staudacher to Bruno Gironcoli and Arnulf Rainer, supplemented by various other exhibitions. Open from April to the end of October.
CHAGALL IN GMÜND
Closely embraced lovers float through the air, colorful, fragrant bouquets of flowers rise into the picture, fantasy birds, horses and sheep populate the wide, bucolic landscapes and fish glide through deep blue waters and sometimes even across the sky. The exhibition of probably the most idiosyncratic wizard of modern art, Marc Chagall, can be seen in the Stadtturmgalerie in Gmünd from May 9th, 2024 to September 29th, 2024, daily from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm
